HELMUT MAKUS June 8, 1933 - December 24, 2005 After a brief and courageous battle with cancer, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle and friend at the age of 72 in the Palliative Care Unit at the St. Boniface Hospital. Helmut was predeceased by his parents, August and Natalie Makus; brothers-in-law, Denis, Reinhold and Otto; and nephew Roger. He leaves to mourn his passing his brothers, Arthur (Lilli) and Gerry; sisters, Linda, Erna and Erika (Gord). He is also survived by his friend Lucy as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, uncle and cousins. Helmut was born in Poland and immigrated to Canada from Germany with his family in 1949. His early years were spent in Greenwald, MB and later in Winnipeg. Most of his adult life was spent working in an industry he loved so dearly, logging in North Western Ontario. He was a heavy equipment operator and loved to talk about the machinery that he operated. Following his retirement from Canadian Pacific Forest Products in 1991, he was presented with a gold watch for his many years of service and dedication. Returning to Winnipeg, gardening became his passion. Helmut took great pride in his home, yard and garden. His house was spotless and his garden was perfect and weed less. As a result of his hard work his garden always produced enough for him, his family and friends, which he shared generously. After being diagnosed with cancer in August 2005, he accepted his illness bravely and never wondered aloud why me? The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care Helmut received from the Home Care and Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital. Cremation has taken place and in keeping with Helmut's wishes a family service will take place on Friday, December 30 at 4:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helmut's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0V9. Rest In Peace. Arrangements in care of: KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson - North of McIvor 338-0331
